Commissioners urge a five-year, pragmatic focus on housing and land use

At the Plan Commission meeting, a commissioner argued the comprehensive-plan update should emphasize a shorter, pragmatic five-year horizon rather than a distant 10-year vision because several major projects are already underway. The commissioner cited recent actions including the city's purchase of land for industrial purposes, construction of a new high school, a subdivision north of the high school and development outside the city limits on the south side as reasons to focus near-term planning.

"I think part of the focus this time is going to be more 5 years out and try to be both realistic, pragmatic and in some cases futuristic," the commissioner (speaker 2) said, noting that practical priorities will help target efforts rather than broad, unfunded ideas. Administrator Renee agreed and said the update should identify implementers and champions to carry proposals forward so the plan does not end with unrealized ideas.

Commissioners also raised housing and utilities/energy as priorities and suggested leveraging mapping and outreach to identify the best areas for development and to make Monroe "a place people want to live," a staff member said.
