Public comment at the Jan. 6 meeting focused on local recovery progress and transparency. Bill Johnson, 121 Nassau Rd., said Hurricane Florence (2018) recovery takes time but expressed frustration with the pace of repairs at Pine Lake Dam and urged more visible progress.
Shannon Van Derren, 320 Pine Lake Rd., asked the Board to provide clearer clarification on each vote — specifically whether commissioners are in favor, against, or abstaining — so voters can evaluate officials based on recorded positions rather than impressions. Van Derren also raised concerns about the proposed UDO Lot Drainage Plan, asking whether finished floor elevation requirements would encourage development on wetlands and what protections older homes would have.
Manager Hargrove and staff noted FEMA reimbursements have been received and that a more precise repair estimate and timeline for the Pine Lake dam should be available by Jan. 20. The Board did not take direct action on the public‑comment requests but staff committed to returning amended UDO language and a dam estimate.
