Boiling Spring Lakes bans tobacco use in city parks, establishes $100 civil penalty

The Boiling Spring Lakes Board of Commissioners voted March 3 to amend Chapter 10, Article III of the city code to ban tobacco use in city parks. Assistant City Manager Nicole Morgan explained that enforcement would fall to the police department and that signage notifying the public of the prohibition would be posted in parks after adoption.
"Violations of Sec. 10-71 may also result in a civil penalty of $100.00, as outlined in the fee schedule," Morgan said. Commissioner Teagan Hall moved to adopt the ordinance amending the code; the motion carried 4-0. The order allows police to eject individuals for violations of the code or state law and adds a specific civil-penalty option for tobacco infractions in parks.
