Presenter Luke gives end-of-term classroom and program update

Luke, identified in the meeting as the staff presenter, summarized recent classroom work and upcoming events across the district. He reported preschoolers were focusing on “letters g and h for gingerbread and the houses,” early-number recognition and name-tracing; second graders were studying landforms, weather and double-digit addition; and third graders were beginning division and writing weather-related informational essays. He also said the Spanish II students had completed the Spanish 101 college-credit test, which can earn students four college credits through BMCC if they score 70% or better.

Luke highlighted several upcoming events and programs that feed into instruction and student engagement. He described the elementary winter wonderland on Thursday the 18th (a pajama day with morning activities and an afternoon movie and treats), the elementary music holiday concert (scheduled “at 05:45 in the noon gym” in the transcript) and a five-day RISE STEM experience that will count toward science grades. On classroom assessment and curriculum, he said students in multiple grades are producing extended writing projects — for example, a third-grade informational piece on blizzards and a high-school memoir unit centered on Elie Wiesel’s Night. “I have been lax in my duties this year. Most of it's been your fault,” he told the board in a jocular aside while introducing the reports.

The presenter closed with reminders about the Tyler Campbell memorial cake auction on Jan. 9 and encouraged trustees and community members to attend performances and school events. The board did not take formal action on these program updates; they were provided as informational reports.
