The El Paso City Zoning Board of Adjustment on Aug. 10 approved a special-exception request to allow a 20-foot by 21-foot, 6-inch carport to encroach into the front-yard setback at 9901 Trinidad Drive. Planning staff recommended approval with conditions, and the board voted to approve the request by voice vote.
Alejandra Gonzalez of the Planning and Inspections Department outlined the proposal and staff conditions, saying notices were mailed to property owners within 300 feet on July 30, 2026 and that the department had not received written support or opposition. Gonzalez recommended approval provided two conditions are met: the accessory structure over the side-street setback be removed and the accessory structure attached to the rear porch be separated by 5 feet, as shown in the submitted plans.
Homeowner Ray Baca, who said he and his wife have lived at the house for about 40 years, told the board the carport "is going to be a architecturally conforming structure" that "will enhance the value of the home." Baca said the applicants agreed to the modifications recommended by staff. After brief questions from the board, a member moved to approve with staff conditions and the board passed the motion by voice vote.
The board recorded the case as approved and moved on to the next agenda item. The approval is subject to the conditions laid out by Planning and Inspections and any required building permits and inspections.
