Sheriff reports calls for service more than doubled; jail inspection set for April

Sheriff Ruhl distributed the Richland County Sheriffs 2024 year-end report and told the board that calls for service have more than doubled compared with the prior year.
Ruhl said the volume of incoming calls has put pressure on the communications unit and that the department may need another full-time employee in Communications in the near future. He also reported the jail inspection is scheduled for April 16 and is expected to take about 1.5 days.
Commissioners asked about reimbursement from the state; Steve Gjerdevig said he received the first payment last month. The board also discussed a Wilkin County housing agreement; Gjerdevig said Wilkin County is awaiting a PREA audit report before it can begin housing inmates under that agreement.
