Board lowers kindergarten technology fee to $20, keeps devices in classrooms

The Pickerington Local Board of Education approved a change to the district's technology-fee structure that lowers the kindergarten fee to $20 and assesses a technology fee to all students.
President Kathy Olszewski and technology staff explained the change is possible because kindergarten students will no longer take Chromebooks home; devices will remain in carts in classrooms and on charge. "We are decreasing the technology fee... kindergarten students are no longer gonna take their Chromebooks home," Dr. Smialek said. Board members confirmed the K–12 technology fee remains $40 for grades 1–12 and voted to approve the adjustment by roll call.
Board members said the change reflects lower expected wear and tear on devices and simplifies fee administration. The board moved the item, seconded it and approved the measure during the consent/fee section of the meeting.
