The Whittier City Council heard a substantial public comment period during its June 12 special meeting, with live and teleconference commenters raising concerns related to the agenda item on federal immigration activity. The city recorded live comments from individuals listed in the meeting record as Felicia; Ken Vadra; Jeanne Renner; Rolando Cano; Nick Donovan; Lizette Navarez; Janice; an attendee recorded as "Anonymous"; Tony Liotto; Brenda Victoria Castillo; Martha Escutia; Jafet; and Jenny Martin, and teleconference comments from Tamora; Orlando Terrazas; another "Anonymous" caller; and Ashley. The City Attorney reminded speakers their comments were limited to the agenda item.
Following public comment, Council Member Vicky Santana requested staff return with an accounting of how funding provided to the Hispanic Outreach Taskforce (HOT) was spent and whether the scope of the spending can be changed. Santana also requested that the City Attorney provide a legal opinion on the contract for Flock cameras and data-sharing provisions. The Council did not take a formal vote on either of those requests at the meeting but recorded the items as requests for staff follow-up.
The public-comment record and submitted documents are part of the official record and are on file with the City Clerk; a recording of the oral communications is available through the City’s website, according to the meeting minutes. The Council directed staff to prepare the ICE-response protocol and also flagged the HOT spending and Flock contract for separate staff reports.
