Mather Center closes wood shop for safety review; adds fall-prevention and fitness classes

The Commission on Aging heard program and facility updates from the Mather Center at its Jan. 21 meeting. Commissioners were informed the wood shop is currently closed while safety and maintenance issues are reviewed; the group agreed to monitor the situation and revisit it at the February meeting if necessary.
Staff also announced a policy change: beginning Feb. 2, members who pay instructors directly for fitness or art classes will complete payment at the front desk before class. Program expansions include the Matter of Balance eight-week fall-prevention course offered in partnership with Fairfield University School of Nursing, available free to Darien senior program members, and a new weekly Essentrics fitness class.
No formal votes were taken on program expansions during the meeting; commissioners discussed monitoring the wood shop closure and ensuring members are informed of the new payment procedure.
