The Levelland City Council approved the Levelland Fire Department’s request to donate excess and outdated rescue equipment to the Texas A&M Forest Service Helping Hands Program. Council members voted unanimously to approve the donation at the June 16 meeting after staff described the equipment’s origin (a 2008 Homeland Security grant) and noted the legal and recordkeeping requirements for transferring or destroying out-of-service equipment.
City staff provided a detailed equipment list including 12 helmets and 12 harnesses and multiple rope lengths (examples cited in the packet include 600-foot, 300-foot and 250-foot runs of various rope types). Staff also noted the city purchased four harnesses and helmets with ARPA funds and has four more harnesses and helmets on order. The donation program provides liability relief to donors and distributes usable gear to volunteer departments across the state; Sundown Volunteer Fire, Whiteface Volunteer Fire and Morton Volunteer Fire were identified as neighboring agencies that could use some equipment and have trained personnel to support LFD in incidents.
