Madison Metropolitan School District reports Phase 1 construction on schedule; $27M spent to date

Scott Chiak, senior executive director of building services for the Madison Metropolitan School District, told the operations work group the referendum construction program is progressing and that Phase 1 is deeply into construction. "About 11 months from now, we'll have these buildings up up running and operational," Chiak said, describing roof trusses, structural steel, and mechanical work on multiple sites.

Chiak said roughly 70 workers are on-site daily at those locations and staff are preparing internal furnishings in coordination with principals. "We are at $507,000,000, and we are still on target and on budget," he said, summarizing the referendum program's total and the district's current tracking. The presentation noted guaranteed maximum price (GMP) line items for specific schools and that furniture, grounds work and other non-construction costs add to the totals.

Board members asked about accessibility and furnishing choices; Chiak said staff had engaged special-education representatives and principals in furnishing decisions and are staggering large orders to avoid supply issues. The district also outlined public and staff input sessions scheduled for early September and additional engagement for larger sites such as Tokyo Orchard Ridge.
