The Zoning Board of Appeals voted Aug. 10 to approve a special permit allowing a Taco Bell with a drive‑through at 79 Pullman Street, subject to conditions on queuing, landscaping and final plan details to be reviewed by the planning board.
Engineer Patrick Doherty presented the plan and said the applicant proposes a 2,250‑square‑foot restaurant with a single drive‑through lane and an escape lane. Doherty noted the traffic memo and said the drive‑through queue proposed (214 feet) is adequate compared with projected 5–7 cars in queue for comparable locations. He also asked the board to strike or modify several staff recommendations related to additional shade trees and compact parking spaces. City planning staff confirmed the proposed escape lane meets the 240‑foot escape‑lane standard and noted other items staff would like clarified before planning‑board review.
Board members expressed support for moving the application forward; several agreed to remove staff recommendations 1a, 1h and 1i as requested by the applicant while keeping standard landscaping, sight‑line and queuing plan requirements. The motion to approve the special permits and waivers carried unanimously. The item will proceed to planning‑board review for detailed parking and site plan compliance.
