Council hears busy May events calendar and directs parks staff to draft turf-management plan

Parks and events staff briefed the Poulsbo City Council on a full May events calendar and said they will return later this year with a turf-management plan and recommendations on fee structures and event scheduling.
Staff described the schedule: the Poulsbo Garden Club plant sale (May 3), Viking Fest (May 14–18) and associated carnival and road race (May 17) — the road race expects about 900 participants — Pauls Brew/Brewfest on May 24 (about 500 cyclists) and Memorial Day observances. Parks staff said some events will temporarily use about half of Anderson Parkway or Waterfront Park and that shuttles and volunteer staffing will be in place.
Councilmember McVay noted recent direction to temporarily pause approvals for new Waterfront Park events because of concerns about compaction and recovery time for turf. “We advised staff to not approve any more new events for Waterfront Park because of feeling of some overuse of the park,” McVay said. Staff responded they are developing a turf-management plan, will consult public works, and expect preliminary recommendations by late summer or early fall.
Council requested staff include potential fee adjustments to cover maintenance costs and to present a single recommendation packet that outlines seasonal limits, fee structures and staffing needs.
