The Poulsbo City Council on April 9 approved a budget amendment to purchase two 2024 Ford F-150 police vehicles using general-fund reserves, after hearing from Police Chief Harding that two existing patrol vehicles are at the end of their service life.
Chief Harding told council the department has a 2012 Tahoe with a failing transmission and a 2015 Explorer with roughly 120,000 miles and that both have heavy wear. “These vehicles are needed because we have two patrol vehicles that are at end of life,” Harding said, explaining the purchase addresses towing capacity, offsite training travel and the need to accommodate two officers who are over 6-foot-5.
Harding said the $160,000 figure is based on a state bid and includes upfitting costs; the base vehicle price for the Ford F-150 police package is roughly comparable to the Explorer, with upfitting and installation of lights, graphics and radio mounts adding to the total. Councilmembers asked about rotation scheduling and fleet-tracking; Harding said staff are conducting a comprehensive review to avoid future “stragglers” and to align replacement cycles.
A motion to approve the budget amendment passed; staff will issue a purchase order and arrange upfitting locally in Poulsbo.
