The Fremont City School Board on Monday approved an athletic appropriation funded by a donation from the Fremont Area Foundation to boost student engagement and school spirit.
The district’s superintendent described plans to purchase 'One Giant Family' T-shirts for fall athletes, subsidize student entry fees to some events and distribute a limited number of student tickets for the first home football game, scheduled for Aug. 28 against Sandusky. "This is a donation that is coming from the Fremont Area Foundation and what they have asked for us to consider are some ways to boost student spirit and to include students involved in activities," the superintendent said.
Board members discussed extending the spirit effort beyond fall athletics, suggesting winter and spring sports and other student groups such as marching band and cheer. Athletic staff including Mister Berndt and Mister Mackey were described as organizing logistics and schedules for the program; the superintendent said coaches have already expressed support. The board approved the appropriation by roll call, with the five voting members recorded as 'Yes.'
The program also includes a giveaway of student tickets for the first home football game. The superintendent said students receiving free entry must attend with a parent or adult and meet behavioral expectations. The donation was presented as intended to build school pride and increase cross-team attendance at events.
