Council earmarks $500,000 GO bond for county IT upgrades

Floyd County officials agreed May 12 to set aside $500,000 from the county's GO bond to fund information-technology upgrades, including replacement of network switches and the purchase of desktop computers.
Commissioner CFO Stan Heil said the IT department has identified 35 switches that are "reaching end of life," and staff obtained a Trace 3 quote of $332,000 for switch replacements and a Dell quote of $221,000 to buy 132 PCs. Heil asked the council whether it was still on board to appropriate $500,000 from the GO bond; Denise Konkle moved to place the funds into a separate line item, and the motion passed unanimously. Auditor Diana Topping said she "will create a new line item under the Council Department's purview" so claims related to the purchases will be processed with Council oversight.
The action creates a council-controlled GO bond line to centralize procurement and spending authority for the upgrades; staff will return with purchasing and recycling schedules as the project moves forward.
