Vernal to accept $442,000 UDOT Safe Routes grant for sidewalks near Discovery Elementary

Public Works Director Keith Despain reported the City was awarded $442,000 through the Utah Department of Transportation’s Safe Routes to School FY27 program to continue sidewalk improvements on 500 West near Discovery Elementary.
"Vernal City applied for and was awarded $442,000 in grant funding through UDOT’s Safe Routes to School program," Despain said, explaining the grant will fund sidewalks from 500 South to 775 South and will rely on a developer to complete the final segment in a future subdivision phase so the east side will be continuous from 500 South to the school.
Mayor Foley and Councilmembers praised the project as a safety improvement; Despain cautioned that UDOT-administered projects can take longer because UDOT selects the engineer and contractor and administers construction. The Council approved the agreement unanimously.
