Council authorizes satellite leak-detection contract to identify water losses

Water Superintendent Ivan Merrell presented an Aesterra contract to use satellite imagery for water-leak detection. He described an initial satellite scan, follow-up ground verification with acoustic locating, and a second scan roughly six months later after repairs.
"The total amount of the contract was $48,000," Merrell said. Councilmember Ted Munford made a motion to approve the contract; Councilmember Ed Long seconded and the motion passed unanimously on roll-call vote.
Merrell said the first scan would occur within about thirty days after signing and that the two-scan process was intended to let the City identify leaks, make repairs, and measure improvement in a subsequent scan. Funding for the contract was included in the water and sewer budget.
