Vernal renews cooperative wildfire agreement with state forestry agency

Corey Auger, representing the Utah Division of Forestry, Fire, and State Lands, asked the Council to approve a renewal of the master cooperative agreement that governs cooperative wildland-fire response across cities and counties in the state.
"Mr. Auger stated that the agreement is the master cooperative agreement for the cooperative wildfire system, which is used by many counties, cities, and agencies throughout the State," Auger told the Council and explained that the agreement includes language reflecting state legislation and that certain trigger points shift fiscal responsibility for large wildland fires to the State. He noted that the Uintah Fire Suppression Special Service District maintains required data and that the high-risk mapping did not identify red areas inside Vernal City limits.
Councilmember Ed Long said the agreement is essential for community protection. Councilmember Nick Porter moved to approve the cooperative agreement; Councilmember Robin O’Driscoll seconded and the motion passed unanimously on a roll-call vote.
