Superintendent Brian Rentsch told the Claymont City School District board on March 9 that he is recommending closure of the Intermediate School and reassigning grades to other buildings to take effect next school year. "He is recommending closing the Intermediate School, and moving the 8th grade to the High School, 4th and 5th grade to the Middle School, and 3rd grade to the Elementary," Rentsch said during the strategic planning discussion.
Rentsch prefaced the recommendation by saying a decision must be made by the end of March for changes to be implemented in the fall. The board set a public forum for Monday, March 16 at 6 p.m. at the Middle School to take questions and comments from staff and the community, followed by a special meeting Tuesday, March 31 at 6 p.m. at the Administrative Office to consider next steps. Board members engaged in open discussion about the consolidation options and cited financial concerns; no final vote occurred at the March 9 meeting.
