Claymont staff report multiple winter-era facility failures; board authorizes fire‑alarm bid at high school

Bradon Smith, Claymont City Schools’ Building and Grounds Supervisor, told the board that recent winter weather exposed several facility failures: a frozen line that broke a sprinkler line that required emergency repair, issues with a 20‑year‑old air handler for the gym and cafeteria, a boiler repair, and a rooftop unit repair. Smith also warned that the high‑school fire alarm system is nearing end of life and parts are increasingly hard to find.
The board authorized the district to advertise bids for fire alarm replacement at Claymont High School. The authorization was part of the superintendent’s recommendations and was approved unanimously. The board also discussed the capital plan and asked the superintendent and administrators to present 1-, 3-, 5- and 7-year capital options, including possible building consolidation to reduce costs.
"Alarms have been going off spontaneously and parts are getting harder to find," Smith reported, noting the district must consider replacement options to ensure reliable fire detection and maintenance access.
