Log Cabin Volunteer Fire Department asks council to revisit MOU funding cut

Representatives of the Log Cabin Volunteer Fire Department told the City Council on Oct. 17 that a recent reduction in the department’s Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) funding, approved Sept. 19, 2024, is not feasible given the department’s call volume and current needs.
Chief Cory Abbe, joined by Captain Jack Kemp and Angie Kemp, said the LCVFD signed the MOU in good faith and had expected the fee could be reconsidered. Chief Abbe said the department has increased volunteer numbers since May and that the approved monthly fee does not cover operational demands. He committed to submit monthly invoices and reports and to bring a financial request with a proposed starting number to the council’s next meeting.
Mayor Jennifer Williams and councilmembers discussed communications and the prospect of joining ESD #11 in the future; the council noted the decision to lower the MOU payment was influenced by plans to join ESD #11 but that the ESD transition may not occur soon. Councilmember Randy Page asked the department to outline specific needs; Councilmember Paul Eckeberger requested financial detail for consideration.
No vote was taken; the item will be placed on the November regular council agenda for further negotiation.
