Spanishburg/ Sun Valley buildings face major stabilization costs; FEMA review ongoing

Leslie Wellman reported Spanishburg’s condition after flood and undermining issues: "The pier cost came in right at $3,000,000 for the 1 side," she said, and added that full stabilization and rebuilding needs could push the total to roughly $4,500,000. Wellman said FEMA is evaluating engineering reports and determining whether to fund repairs, provide funds to build at another site or pursue alternate procedures; she also said obtaining flood insurance for the rebuilt structure may be difficult and staff are pursuing options with brokers.
The board heard that the damaged wing and gym cannot be used long term, though staff said there is no immediate safety hazard to students. Administrators said they will provide the board with FEMA's decision memo and additional documentation at the upcoming workshop so the board can evaluate options and next steps.
