Ephrata council designates city a Purple Heart City; signage and annual recognition planned

The Ephrata City Council adopted Resolution R26-052 to designate the city a Purple Heart City and to start administrative steps for signage and annual recognition. A council member explained the idea grew from seeing Purple Heart City signs in neighboring towns and from conversations with the American Legion; the member asked that the city recognize Purple Heart recipients each first week of August going forward.
"I was aware of that. I was proud of that," the council member said of his father's World War II service while explaining why he pursued the designation. Staff said the program requires a resolution and that the state provides two signs at no cost; staff estimated expenses of roughly $1,000 to cover additional signage at four entrances and said they had contacted Sergeant Olivares and the Military Order of the Purple Heart to assist with records and recognition. Council moved, seconded and approved Resolution R26-052.
Staff acknowledged the city may delay funding the additional signs until the next budget cycle but will file the required paperwork with the state to secure the designation and two free signs; the council and American Legion representatives present expressed support for ongoing annual recognition.
