Superintendent outlines AI study trip, $145,905 in Spirit of 67 grants and music program recognition

Montgomery said administrators and teacher leaders are exploring how AI materializes differently across grade bands and how to approach adoption intentionally.
"We visited the Stanford Design School...Palo Alto Unified and Design Tech," Montgomery said, adding that district staff are studying AI at leadership panels and local sessions. Doctor Fitzsimmons said teacher leaders attended a multi-day training focused on instructional strategies aligned to district academic and belonging goals.
Montgomery also highlighted "Grants Week": the Spirit of 67 awarded 30 grants totaling $145,905 for the 2026–27 school year supporting STEM, arts, SEL and other classroom initiatives. He noted district videos (Beyond the Budget and Under the Hard Hat) to keep the community informed on facilities and business operations.
On arts, Montgomery announced District 67 received the NAMM Best Communities for Music Education Distinction Award for the seventh consecutive year, placing the district among the top percent of Illinois and national districts recognized for music resources and programming.
What happens next: Administration said it would continue studying AI approaches, share more about the new Illinois state accountability designations in October, and field questions from the board.
