Hampton students account for a large share of VPCC dual enrollment, officials say

VPCC officials told the council dual enrollment has expanded rapidly and that Hampton City Schools are a major contributor to the college's dual-enrollment population.
"Dual enrollment has grown significantly since 2021," Nikkia Madre Smith said, and she noted that Hampton "representing little more than 31% of our total dual enrollment" by one measure. VPCC said the system serves about 2,500 dual-enrolled students across the region and that Hampton City Schools accounted for about 865 of those students in 2024-25.
College leaders said the trend helps retain graduates locally: "At VPCC, close to 80% stay on the Peninsula and contribute back to the local economy," Ada Bagely said, arguing the dual-enrollment pipeline supports the regional workforce.
Council members praised the partnership and said they want to continue expanding opportunities for high-school students to graduate with college credentials.
