Hampton to host April 2 public forum on transportation; April 3 legislative caucus will be legislators-only

Elizabeth Kersey, the city's director of intergovernmental affairs, told the council the city is hosting a public meeting on April 2 at 6:30 p.m. at the Hampton Roads Convention Center to gather resident proposals for transportation solutions and funding ideas. She said the General Assembly Peninsula caucus will meet April 3 at 10 a.m. at VMASC and that six of the ten invited legislators had accepted so far. "We have invited the Peninsula City Councils and Board of Supervisors as well," Kersey said, and residents attending April 2 will be able to complete a survey by ZIP code to record their proposals.
Several council members expressed concern that the April 3 caucus would be limited to legislators and might not include a public-comment period; council members urged that the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel (HRBT) be included as a component of any regional transportation solution and that revenues be clearly tied to the projects they would fund. The council asked staff to inquire whether the April 3 session could be taped for broader public access and to ensure the April 2 forum's survey and participation mechanisms were widely publicized.
