The Knoxville Historic Assembly Commission voted to approve, with conditions, an exterior rehabilitation project at 1726 Washington Avenue on July 18. Staff recommended approval subject to conditions that lap siding be replaced in kind, that detailed plans for porch and deck repairs be submitted for staff approval, and that major repairs be returned to the commission for review.
Staff described the project as a roof replacement, repair of existing windows and siding, and installation of an 8‑by‑10 deck with a shed roof. "The staff recommendation is to approve … subject to the following conditions: all lap siding to be replaced in kind and additional details on the porch repair and reconstruction to be submitted to staff for approval," staff said.
The applicant explained some porch pylons are structurally compromised and that crews will attempt to match original materials and detailing. Commissioners and a neighborhood representative expressed support for the project’s intent to preserve historic features and recommended adherence to the neighborhood’s design guidance on siding profiles and roof materials.
The commission approved the certificate with the stated conditions and delegated review of final trim, roofing and deck details to staff as specified in the motion.
