The City of Buda Sustainability Commission heard a detailed presentation on a volunteer-led study proposing native-plant landscaping, more efficient irrigation systems and treated water reuse as a package to reduce residential and commercial outdoor water use.
Azalea Davis, one of the presenters, summarized the project and team: “Wewill be presenting the exploration of native plants and water usage for residential and commercial use.” The presenters highlighted Habiturf, a UT Austin ecological lawn blend, as a locally developed native option and said native ground covers can reduce irrigation needs by as much as 80% in some cases. "One option alone, we could look at a decrease in almost up to 80%," the presenters said. The team tied those savings to household bills, noting possible monthly gallonage and cost reductions depending on the measures homeowners adopt. They urged the commission to consider incentives and design standards to spur adoption rather than relying solely on homeowner choices.
The presenters also emphasized irrigation upgrades — drip systems, high-efficiency heads and smart controllers that detect local weather — as complementary strategies. The presentation included examples of rebates in peer Texas cities and outlined a menu of technical and behavioral changes aimed at reducing long-term demand as Buda's population grows.
