City Secretary Angela Harrington told the Burton City Council on June 10 that the city is evaluating whether it must complete a Single Audit for federal grant funds. She said federal thresholds have changed — entities spending under $1 million in federal awards typically no longer require a Single Audit — but that state standards for Single Audits remain at $750,000. Harrington reported uncertainties about how much of certain grant funds will be expended and said estimated audit costs she has heard range from $5,000 to $30,000.
The utility system totals in the packet list 1,539,800 gallons pumped for the month, 1,333,760 gallons sold, 150,000 gallons used for fire and flushing, and a recorded water loss of 56,040 gallons (3.64%). Financial figures in the packet show total current charges of $22,367.75 and total receivables of $29,038.80. Harrington said staff will seek clarification in grant paperwork about audit requirements and whether to pursue a letter of intent.
Council did not take immediate action on audit questions; staff will follow up as grant spending and reporting become clearer.
