The Burton City Council approved a two-year contract with contractor Josh Guelker for meter-reading services, with a contract term of June 1, 2025 to May 31, 2027 and an automatic renewal clause unless either party gives written notice. The contract specifies monthly meter reads, re-reads and related duties and sets compensation at $600.00 per month; the contractor will be issued a 1099-NEC for payments and must provide his own transportation.
Council discussion noted the meter reader had identified undocumented meters and notified the utility manager of meters needing replacement. Councilmember Jeff Eckhardt said he felt it was not a good time to give the meter reader a raise given rising utility rates, but Councilmember Nathan Kalkhake pointed out that employed councilmembers had received raises and that the meter reader provides his own transportation and insurance. A motion to approve the contract passed with recorded votes FOR by Councilmembers Tommie Gilmon and Macey Tidwell and AGAINST by Jeff Eckhardt.
The contract requires the meter reader to complete worksheets for the Utility Manager before the 25th of each month and to be available for lock/unlock or re-read requests as needed. Either party may terminate with at least 30 days written notice.
