Crystal Dean, the district's new K–3 literacy coach, told the board her role focuses on teacher coaching cycles and system-level supports designed to sustain literacy gains across elementary grades.
Dean described a three-part coaching cycle—launch, implement and debrief—where coaches work with teachers in grade-level teams or individually to co-plan lessons, model instruction and support data-driven decisions. "This is a body of research that we really use to ground our work within the schools," she said, referencing the Literacy Essentials and a statewide coaching network. District staff reported K–3 teachers completed two coaching cycles this year and that the district has established monthly data meetings plus three larger data dialogues per year to track progress.
District leaders said the coaching role is part of a multiyear implementation plan that pairs curriculum adoption with professional learning and monitoring; the program includes summer trainings and opportunities for teachers to visit other schools for peer learning.
