Superintendent announces April spending freeze amid 5.4% budget push

Superintendent Dr. Foley reported that the board unanimously supported a proposed 5.4% rise in school spending and said she will attend the town council meeting on April 6 to advocate for it. "I will be attending the town council meeting this coming Monday, April 6," she said, adding that some council members were pressing to reduce the budget.
Out of an abundance of caution, Dr. Foley said she has frozen nonessential spending for the month of April to better assess year-end projections while necessary expenditures will continue. She also told the board that the Winthrop Education Corporation awarded $4,000 in spring grants to teachers and staff.
Several public commenters later pushed back on how the spending numbers were presented, with Amelia Arnold noting that the transcript of board materials showed an approximately $589,100 increase in state general-purpose aid and arguing that the tax impact to residents would be lower than a simple headline percentage of the budget increase.
