Winthrop junior tells board bathroom problems and shrinking electives are hurting students

A Winthrop High School junior told the board that malfunctioning toilets consume passing time and that fewer elective credits (five vs six) because of staffing shortages could weaken college applications.
Norabelle, a junior at Winthrop High School and chapter historian for the National Honor Society, told the board that girls' toilets in the high school "do not flush easily" and that students often spend part of their five-minute passing time trying to get a toilet to work.
"On average, 1 minute of that is spent trying to get the toilet to flush," Norabelle said, adding the problem is a daily inconvenience. She also said the graduating class will have five elective credits instead of six because the district lacks enough teachers to cover elective offerings; she said that reduction could make students' college applications "much less competitive." The board did not take immediate action on facility repairs at the meeting; the superintendent's report and later presentations addressed capital-planning and facilities priorities that could inform repair scheduling and budgeting.
