The Fitchburg Board of Health voted Feb. 5 to approve replacement of a failed septic system at 717 Mt. Elam Road with a Presby system and to allow a reduction from the standard four-foot separation to a three-foot separation between the estimated seasonal high groundwater and the bottom of the leach area. Chris Mackenzie of Dillis & Roy presented the plan, which covers a three-bedroom single-family residence served by municipal water. Dr. John Bogdasarian moved for approval; Dianne Tousignant seconded and the motion carried unanimously.
Mackenzie told the Board the Presby design was chosen for its reduced footprint and established DEP remedial-use approvals; the submission referenced the DEP Presby letter last modified March 15, 2022. He reported one soil test pit met the four-foot standard while another measured approximately 3.5 feet of suitable material, and said the proposed pumped, mounded Presby system increases separation from groundwater compared with the failed system. The Conservation Commission reviewed the project and issued approval pending a DEP file number.
