Burton council agrees to support Friends & Neighbors’ LCRA grant application

The Burton City Council agreed by consensus Tuesday to approve a letter supporting a grant application by Burton Friends & Neighbors to the Lower Colorado River Authority. Mayor Karen Buck read the letter aloud during the special meeting and the three councilmembers in attendance consented to sign the document on behalf of the city.
The support letter asks the LCRA Grants Review Committee to consider funding two projects at the city-owned ballpark: converting field lights to energy-efficient LED fixtures and adding covers over the seating area between the two ballfields. "We understand that Friends & Neighbors is applying for a grant to help fund two projects at the ballpark — the first to change the lighting to a more cost-efficient LED lighting, the second to purchase covering for the seating area between the two ballfields," Buck read from the letter.
The letter frames the grant as an investment in youth sports and community gathering spaces, noting that Friends & Neighbors has used city property for more than 20 years and that the partnership moved from an informal "gentlemen’s handshake" to a formal relationship this spring. The council recorded that three members present would sign the letter, and no formal separate motion to approve the letter was recorded beyond the stated consensus.
The special meeting then proceeded to adjourn; the minutes record the meeting ended at 12:12 p.m.
