Public input favors keeping Hampton carousel at its current downtown site, staff says

Robin McCormick, who summarized two public engagement sessions, told the council that most respondents said the historic carousel should remain in its current downtown location, citing proximity to the History Museum and Air and Space Museum and suitability for school field trips. "The vast majority of people said it should belong in its current location," McCormick said.
McCormick said an in-person session at the convention center drew about 60 attendees and a Facebook Live session had roughly 800 viewers. While several alternatives were proposed in comments — including a Millpoint Park rendering, a Buckroe option and a late suggestion of Bluebird Gap Farm — McCormick said the downtown location drew the strongest public support. She summarized that many commenters asked why the carousel could not remain or be relocated within the current riverfront park area.
City Manager Mary Bunting told council that staff would give the public about a month to digest new information, hold a public-comment opportunity at the June meeting, and aim for a final decision at the July meeting. That schedule, staff said, will allow council and residents more time to compare options before committing to park improvements.
