County planning staff presented a renewal request for an existing communications tower at 6270 W. 191st St., noting the structure has been on the site since the 1970s and has received previous extensions and renewals. Jay Leipzig, planning director, said the tower includes communications equipment for Evergy and telecommunications providers, that staff reviewed site landscaping and maintenance and that two legacy waivers (a step setback and lattice-guy-wire configuration) remain part of the site's historical approvals.
“Staff does recommend approval of this item for a 20 year term,” Leipzig said, adding that the site must comply with FAA and FCC requirements and that trees and fencing identified in the landscaping plan must be maintained. Board members asked technical and policy questions about setback standards, tower height and the practical reach of regulations; staff confirmed the previous extension was already constructed and that the current request is to renew the permit for the existing height and configuration. The board approved forwarding the staff recommendation to the Board of County Commissioners for consideration on Sept. 10.
