The process included a community survey of 429 respondents, stakeholder and leadership work sessions, student listening sessions, and two professional‑development days to refine wording and design.
Consultant Christie Teal described the narrowing of initial competencies to six priority skills shared across grade levels and the decision to use distinct elementary and secondary wording (the elementary poster uses "I can" statements). "We narrowed it down to 6," the presentation noted; the leadership team and stakeholder committee confirmed the top five and spent extra time deciding whether to label the sixth competency "empathy" or "compassion," ultimately choosing "compassion" because the group felt it was more action oriented and measurable. The board discussed implementation steps; administrators said staff will do a February inventory by building to identify current practices and pilot one or two competencies per site.
Board members expressed support for rolling the Portrait into parent‑teacher conferences and school communications. The Chair moved to adopt the document, the motion was seconded and the board approved the Portrait of a Rambler as presented.
