Council allows police chief to pursue state accreditation; TML to fund first year

The Arcola City Council authorized the police chief to execute an accreditation agreement with the Texas Police Chiefs Association Foundation after a staff presentation on the program’s requirements and benefits. Police Chief Carl Riley said the accreditation involves meeting roughly 170 standards and that Texas Municipal League (TML) will fund the first year of the program.
Chief Riley described operational requirements including policy updates, evidence-room maintenance and annual training standards. He said accreditation typically lasts four years before reapplication and that after the first year the department would be responsible for annual costs the chief estimated at about $600 per year. “It’s like a 170 things we have to meet,” Chief Riley said, describing the scope of standards the department must satisfy.
Council members expressed support and moved to authorize the chief to execute the agreement; the motion was seconded and the council signaled approval.
