The Arcola City Council passed an ordinance on May 13 to canvass and declare the results of the May 3, 2025 general election, a legal step required under state law. A city representative told the council there was a tie in one seat, prompting a scheduled runoff for Saturday, June 7, 2025.
Following passage of the canvass ordinance, the city secretary administered the oath of office to those declared elected. At the meeting the oath was recited for council members including Greg Abar and Evelyn Jones. Council then voted to table selection of a mayor pro tem until after the June runoff. The council recorded the ordinance passage and the motions by voice vote during the meeting.
