Commission majority recommends higher council pay, keeps mayor's 2027 salary unchanged
Summary
The commission's majority signaled no change for the mayor's 2027 salary, recommended raising the council president to $94,458 and council members to $72,660 for 2027, and set a 3.2% cost-of-living adjustment for 2028 based on the Western Region CPI.

Commissioner Madison described the majority's preliminary salary determinations and the CPI metric chosen for the 2028 adjustment. The draft report lists 2027 salaries effective January 1, 2027, with the mayor unchanged, council president at $94,458, and council members at $72,660; a uniform 3.2% increase is projected for 2028 based on the Western Region CPI.
"A majority of the commission believes that the current salary for the mayor is appropriate for 2027 and should be adjusted in 2028 to reflect an anticipated cost of living increase," Commissioner Madison said, adding that the commission pivoted from the U.S. CPI average to the Western Region CPI after Commissioner Taylor identified a 3.2% Western Region figure. The change reduced the previously-discussed 3.5% projection to 3.2% for 2028.
Commissioners did not finalize the numbers for budget adoption during the special meeting; several asked staff to confirm calculations and noted the figures will be part of the publicly distributed report and subject to comment at the August hearing.
