Board grants shoreland setback variance allowing Gille house closer to water

Jacob Gille asked the Oconto County Board of Adjustment on June 23 for a 28-foot variance from the county’s 75-foot shoreland setback so he could build approximately 47–48 feet from the ordinary high-water mark. Gille said the parcel has wetlands and little upland area; staff (Gabe Moody) confirmed the petition was noticed properly and that the Department of Natural Resources issued a permit for the driveway portion of the project.
Neighbor Thomas King asked how stormwater would be handled and said he worried the project could block flow. After deliberation the board adopted findings of fact that cited wetlands and limited upland as unique physical limitations and moved to grant the variance. The roll-call vote was Christianson, Heise, Meier and Sleeter in favor; Behrend opposed. The order spells out appeals procedures and clarifies the applicant must still obtain sanitary and zoning permits.
