Skokie 68 highlights play-based learning at KIDS Summit; Devonshire kindergarten shows classroom examples

Dr. Samojedny, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction, presented an overview of Play-Based Learning (PBL) at the district KIDS Summit, explaining that play is “a powerful instructional tool” that fosters creativity, problem-solving and social-emotional skills while supporting academic goals. She said Skokie 68 has integrated PBL into its curriculum to meet diverse developmental needs.
Brian Ritz, principal of Devonshire Elementary, and his kindergarten team—Beth Chiet, Angela Schroeder and Judy Solway—shared classroom examples including block-building, dramatic play areas and problem-solving games. The presenters described how those activities are used intentionally to connect exploration to learning objectives and collaboration among students.
