Council directs staff to explore foreclosure on three abatement liens after town spent $16,000 on one property

Mayor Johann R. Wallace asked the Town Attorney to explain the process for foreclosing on the town’s property abatement liens for three properties: 217 Pima Street, 303 Apache Street and 103 Tomahawk. Town Attorney Thomas Benavidez told council the foreclosure process is complicated and will carry costs, and he noted: "the Town has already put $16,000.00 into 217 Pima over the years."
Council members discussed whether the properties’ value justified foreclosure costs and whether pursuing liens would be worthwhile. By motion (moved by Johann Wallace and seconded by Cynthia Butterworth) the council directed staff to explore foreclosure as an option to reimburse the town for remediation costs; the minutes record the motion as passed unanimously.
