Town Manager Suzanne Harvey told the council on March 26 that residents had repeatedly asked for stricter enforcement of the town’s code provisions covering zoning, health and safety, buildings and construction, and neighborhood preservation. "We are prepared to be aggressive," Harvey said, while cautioning that some property owners may contest enforcement actions and that litigation could raise costs for the town.
Council members discussed the tradeoffs and agreed to proceed. "Equal application of the law," Mayor Johann R. Wallace said as council confirmed active enforcement going forward. The town will coordinate with police and legal counsel and expects some matters could be referred to court if property owners resist enforcement.
