Generator battery failure raises prospect of $50,000-plus replacement

Town road supervisor Maurice Jettie reported a servicing incident where the generator battery failed; Milton Cat indicated the generator is nearing end of service life and replacement could exceed $50,000, though grants may be available because the office serves as the town emergency shelter.

Maurice Jettie reported that Milton Cat serviced the town generator and during the service the battery "blew up." Milton Cat conveyed that the generator is approaching the end of its service life; a replacement unit could cost more than $50,000. Because the town office functions as an emergency shelter, Cathy Ainsworth noted grant opportunities might be available to offset replacement costs.
No procurement decision was made at the meeting. The Selectboard asked staff to explore grant options and to return cost and funding recommendations to a future Selectboard meeting.
