Common School working group advances septic testing, funding research; board resists paying over-contract invoice

Members of the Common School Working Group updated the Selectboard on May 11 about the April 1 open house and follow-up planning. Greta Brunswick, Julie Wolcott, Jeanne Hopkins and Sorel Chaput said the first floor is intended for multipurpose use including after-school programs; Julie told the board the Community Center is "100% behind using the first floor for after school programs." The group recommended septic test pits be performed to determine capacity; minutes note $3,000 in the grant is available to do initial test pits and Barnard & Gervais quoted $1,000 plus excavator costs.
The Selectboard approved a motion to accept the low estimate for soil analysis from a firm with engineering qualifications so any work can be used for future design. The group also discussed potential funding sources — Northern Borders, Village Trust Initiative, economic development partners and a capital campaign — and plans to research rental management options if residential or office space is pursued on upper floors. Separately, the board discussed an overage on GVV’s final invoice: the planning group praised GVV's work but the board said it prefers to hold the firm to the contracted "do not exceed" amount unless the firm agrees to share the overage.
