Selectboard opens paving bids, authorizes administrator to sign VTRANS grants

The Town of Fairfield Selectboard on May 11 opened sealed bids for a grant-funded paving project and authorized Town Administrator Cathy Ainsworth to sign related VTRANS grant agreements. The paving grant is for $191,496 to be completed this summer; a separate Structures Grant for North Road culvert replacement was reported at $200,000 with an estimated project cost of about $575,000, leaving the town potentially more than $100,000 short of full funding.
Bids for Project Option 2 were announced by Selectboard member David Persons: Whitcomb bid $313,305.72 ($88.28/ton, 3,549 tons); SD Ireland $332,010.00 ($93/ton, 3,570 tons); Hungerford $325,956.00 ($92/ton, 3,543 tons); Pike $320,916.60 ($88.70/ton, 3,618 tons); and AllStates $393,955.50 ($109.25/ton, 3,606 tons). The board deferred award to a subsequent meeting after a full review of the bids. David Davio of Pike told the board that "Pike warranties their work for one year." The board voted to authorize Ainsworth to sign the VTRANS grant agreements; Tom Howrigan moved, David Persons seconded and the motion passed with all in favor.
The Selectboard will review bid details and funding gaps before making an award at the next meeting. The Structure Grant's estimated total project cost and the difference between grant funding and estimated cost were raised as items staff should address in advance of award.
