Thomas Benavidez told the council that three council seats (Butterworth, Trate and Thompson) and the mayoral seat (Wallace) are on the ballot in the Nov. 3, 2026 general election. He explained that incumbents whose terms do not expire this year must resign before running; incumbents whose terms expire this year may run without resigning.
Benavidez also noted statutory deadlines: voter registration closes Oct. 5, 2026 at midnight (citing ARS §16-120, §16-134) and early voting begins under ARS §16-542(C). The council discussed timing and Mayor Wallace expressed interest in beginning advertising for candidates.
